Two-seat sofa and armchair in rattan
Attributed to Bonacina
Two-seat sofa and armchair
Rattan
Date of creation: circa 1950-1960
Sofa L98 cm (approx.)
Armchair L57 cm (approx.)
Condition commensurate with age, fine patina of the rattan
Rare salon suite in rattan comprising an armchair and a two-seat sofa,
remarkable for the quality of its bending and the elegance of its organic lines. The
frames are made of hot-bent rattan, with double bent armrests and seats
formed of a fine assembly of rattan canes following a continuous curve between the seat and
the back.
The construction reflects a very high standard of craftsmanship: multiplied uprights, cross-members
reinforced with rattan bindings, complex bending and particularly
harmonious proportions. The design evokes the finest Italian productions of the post-war period and
recalls the creations issued by Bonacina as well as certain models attributed to Franco
Albini or Vittorio Bonacina, without a definitive attribution being put forward at this stage.
The ensemble is distinguished by its light and sculptural aesthetic, emblematic of Mediterranean furniture
of the 1950s, today highly sought after by collectors of Italian design.
Comparative bibliography:
Italian productions of Bonacina, Dal Vera and Vittorio Bonacina, circa 1950-1960.
At Lurago d'Erba, in Brianza, the Bonacina workshops made rattan a material of Italian modern design, collaborating after the war with architects such as Franco Albini, whose Margherita armchair marks the year 1951. This rattan salon suite, hot-bent with its double armrests, its multiplied uprights and its reinforcing bindings, reflects this craftsmanship. The seat, formed of fine canes following a continuous curve from seat to back, gives it a light and sculptural silhouette. In the absence of a mark, the attribution rests on comparison with the house's productions.
